So in my last post, I set out my plans to start sewing once we moved flat. Well that went out the window with lockdown; we currently have no idea when we’re going to move. However, lockdown also meant that I had my sewing machine and overlocker sent up, so I could get started. Part of this was a desire to sew things for the NHS, and part was that I anticipated I would have a lot more time on my hands with which to sew.
So here is a visual summary of the last few months!
My first infinity scarf sewn in the round (before the ends were weaved in!)
My first successful project with cables – a snoodAnother rib knit infinity scarf – my other half liked the blue one so much (which was a gift for someone else) that he requested one of his ownA simple rib knit snood in fire colours, as a birthday gift for a friend My current work in progress – a honeycomb baby blanket using the pattern at https://www.lanasyovillos.com/en/home/honeycomb-blanketClose up of the bottom edge of the blanket Button headbands made for NHS workers An initial messy attempt at face coverings for family Scrub bagsMy first ever piece of clothing – and in jersey and using my overlocker for the first time, no less – I took a slight “go hard or go home” attitude…! A pair of leggings for a friend’s baby using Pirates for Patterns petite pegs pattern. And a co-ordinating little t-shirt with lap neckline – using a Pirates for Patterns wee lap tee pattern. I had some trouble with the neckline as I thought I needed to have excess neckband left over and didn’t realise I was going to have to remove the excess anyway, so I didn’t need to bunch the neckline the way I did. And I actually hemmed the bottom twice, which led to it getting all stretched out. Live and learn!Much neater masks using the Tilly and the Buttons method – these have a pocket for a filter and a nose channel. Matching masks for me and my other half!
So that’s my journey so far – I have had a few mishaps that I had to chuck. The baby tee was meant to be entirely in the blue jersey, but I didn’t cut on the fold and ran out of fabric – so I used the grey to coordinate and thankfully it looks fab. I then tried to make a onesie out of the grey, which I had a nightmare with due to one of the steps in the pattern with the neckband – I’m going to remake it and use the method from the Pirates for Patterns lap tee, as that is much easier.
I’ve got a big fabric stash waiting and I can’t wait to get started on more things – and sewing something I can wear! I learned a lot from the bits and pieces I’ve attempted so far and I’m looking forward to looking back in another few months and hopefully having ironed out more mistakes.
And finally, here is some bonus embroidery I have done so far this year:
